For those who don’t want to read their granddaddy’s old comics, Marvel is launching a Season One line of original graphic novels — the publisher’s first — next year to honor the company’s 50th anniversary. The hardcover books star a new, young generation of today’s comic creators bringing a modern voice and sensibility to tales of classic Marvel heroes and teams.

EXCLUSIVE: Whether paying homage to Marlon Brando’s cameo in “Superman” or just wanting splashy marquee name, Christopher Nolan had all along been seeking an A-list thesp for Jor-El, Superman’s biological father, since agreeing to godfather the franchise reboot “Man of Steel” for Warner Bros.
He’s got his man, and it’s Russell Crowe.

The mercurial Aussie is in negotiations to take the role in “Man of Steel,” which Zack Snyder is on board to direct. Brit thesp Henry Cavill set to play Superman. Warner Bros. had no comment on Crowe’s casting.

Amy Adams, Kevin Costner, Diane Lane and Michael Shannon have already joined the cast. David Goyer penned the script and developed the story with Nolan who, as is his way, has kept plot details under wraps.

Charles Roven will produce along with Emma Thomas, Nolan and Deborah Snyder.

With production set to start next month, Jor-El was one of the last roles to cast, though they also are looking for a big name to play Superman’s biological mother.

Brando was 54 when he appeared in Richard Donner’s 1978 classic; Crowe is 47. Other names that had gone out for the role included Sean Penn and Clive Owen, Crowe was the final choice.

Crowe is currently filming “The Man With the Iron Fists” for Universal.

Green Lantern needed to be a lot more space focused, with a lot more action scenes, and way less romance on earth moments. I’ll tell you what though, even though I expected more from this movie than what I saw, I did not come out of it thinking it was a horrible movie. It had some really long drawn out scenes between Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds, but I still liked watching their characters. The CGI was not amazing, but the creative powers of the Green Lantern ring was shown in its full affect. The main villain was not that menacing to be honest, but at least there was a back story to him. Green Lantern had a lot of flaws, but for a summer movie about a comic book character first written in the 1950′s, it was not the worst thing you could of seen, could of been better though. More space battles darn it!

If you do not know the story of Green Lantern, try not to worry about it, with 60 years of history, trying to get a good handle on the Green Lantern universe would be a daunting challenge. Short story, Green Lantern is the story of a test pilot named Hal Jordan who is given the Ring of a dying Green Lantern Corp member Abin Sur. The ring allows Hal Jordan to create anything he can think of, from swords, to guns, to giant green dildo. His ring allows him to fly and shoot energy bursts. He is one of many in the Green Lantern Corp, a peace keeping force created by a bunch of immortal blue aliens. Each Green Lantern keeps peace in a sector of the universe, that composes of many galaxies, with worlds and civilizations.

Need more of this, but bigger

Like I said the movie could of used the whole space police story-line better, rather than having the entire setting on Earth. Do i really want to see politicians, doctors, and random everyday people in a Green Lantern flick? NO. I want to see giant spaceships, star ship battles, and giant space monsters. The movie does introduce Parallax, but what so menacing and different about him than the 20 other villains you see in other movies. They should of come up with a better way of showcasing this villain, other than having him be this giant live sucking octopus.

Moving the whole setting to Earth introduces a whole bunch of characters I do not care about. Like Hal Jordan’s friend, that I do not even remember his name, because he was just there to be normal. I do not want normal in a movie like this, the more weird and sci-fi stuff that you can think of, the better.

I will give credit for the way the power ring was shown though. It does make you think, just about anything Hal Jordan can think of, can be created by the ring. I just wish the things that were created, were cooler. Swords, guns, rocks, are okay, but you could of made anything you wanted, so why choose objects that I see in every other movie. Cannot he create a giant flying mechanical horse, or maybe even a lazzzzer gun. I guess Hal Jordan was getting used to it, but it does not explain why the other Green Lanterns could not come up with something cooler. The movie shows the top Green Lanterns going after Parallax, and the best thing they can come up with is a giant net? Really?

Needs less of this, way less

As far as the acting and the actors, I had no problem with any of them. Ryan Reynolds was a pretty solid lead, Blake Lively looked amazing. Sinestro was pretty cool, all the scenes with other Green Lanterns in them were pretty nicely done, too bad there was not many of them. Top notch job in the casting department.

Green Lantern needed to be way out there with its sci-fi theme, more places to visit, more creative and ridiculous powers. Less of Earth and everyday human stuff, more with the extraterrestrial/other-worldly stuff. Hopefully the sequel will brings some of that.
