In 1964, Jonny Quest aired to rave reviews as the first, adult action/adventure cartoon in prime time. It had cool jazz music by Hoyt Curtin and terrific, high contrast pen and ink design work by Doug Wildey. As an animator and long time JQ junkie, I had always wanted a set of Jonny Quest action figures but, due to high production costs, the show only lasted one season; not long enough to spawn any kind of serious toys or other merchandising tie-ins. So, almost 50 years later, I made my own. Here is my Valentine to one of the coolest, if not THE coolest, cartoons ever to spin up the imagination of a 53 year old man now going on six. Enjoy!

The cult fave blaxploitation badass BLACK DYNAMITE is coming back to hand out more beatdowns, but not in a sequel just yet.

The hard-hittin’ lady-pleasin’ street machine is coming to Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim next year, and we’ve got a couple of stills from the show to give you an idea of how it’ll look. The Black Dynamite Animated Series further chronicles the exploits of Black Dynamite and his crew. Executive produced by Carl Jones (The Boondocks, Freaknik: The Musical), the series features the voice talents of Michael Jai White, Tommy Davidson, Kym Whitley, Byron Minns, Clifton Powell and JB Smoove.

But that ain’t all, fool. Next year will also see the one-shot comic “Black Dynamite: Slave Island”, with a story by director Scott Sanders, Michael Jai White and Byron Minns. Check out some artwork below. The story follows our hero as he seeks to put an end to a mysterious island… where an insidious 19th century legacy of The Man still exists.

And on top of that, on Saturday October 9th at the New York Comic Con, there will be a panel and special screening of the film, plus an early sneak of the animated footage. Probably our best bet for any updates on a live-action sequel, too. Dig.

Saw a bunch of movies this weekend. I had a lot of time on my hands, having no life helps

Priest

I was taking a chance with this movie, I was hoping it was going to be a lot of action scenes, what I got was few action scenes and a weak plot. The basic idea here is Vampires in this movie aren’t human, there another species all together. They look and move like Lickers from Resident Evil. The human race turns to religion for protection, Now, I may not be very religious, but why would people turn to the church, who don’t have any weapons to protect them, and from what I can tell hasn’t been very effective in stopping the vampires.  Even more puzzling is why would the church allow technology like flame throwers and guns from being invented by SCIENCE! When science would eventually make religion less viable?

Anyway, the movie starts with Priest (Paul Bettany) and a whole bunch of other Priests being ambush by the un-human vampires, now here is the major twist, so if you don’t want to know don’t highlight. They capture one of the Priests called Black Hat (Karl Urban), the queen vampire turns him into an Human Vampire that can survive in the sunlight, Black Hat believing humanity has become corrupt, which isn’t explain very well other than he was taken to the vampire layer and saw it when the queen vampire bit him. I don’t know, they probably didn’t know how this was going to work either when they wrote it I’m guessing. His plan is to take his flock of un-human vampires to attack the main human city by train.

But before he does that, he kidnaps a young girl whose father is played by (and this I found this to be funny) Stephen Moyer, If you watch True Blood, you will have a chuckle inside. The young girl turns out to be Priest’s Niece and he goes off in search of her, in the process he meets a young sheriff, and is being hunted by another priest played by Maggie Q. Now, I ask again, why does religion have to be in this movie? Through out this movie I was just thinking, they should just kept the vampires and added cowboys, cowboys vs vampires, YES! That would be brilliant. This was either a extremely expensive way to say religion is bad for you, or it was originally plan to be a vampire western movie, but at the last second a studio exec said, “we need religion in here, because it’ll sell better the evangelicals, and maybe it’ll let them see how bad religion can turn out!”.

I will give them credit for the animated opening scene, really cool.

Game of Thrones Ep 05
Woo! Action in almost every scene, I have no idea how the sister angle for Lady Stark is going to play out, but the breast feeding scene made me uncomfortable. More and more, the Imp is starting to become my favorite character.

Treme Ep 04
That Japanese guy can play, where can I get more of his music. Alan Richman getting his face drenched was pretty funny.

Faster

What was the point of focusing on Billy Bob Thornton’s character, and having him go through that whole entire redemption plot? It doesn’t make any sense, especially considering what happened at the end of the movie. OK, you know what, spoilers. Billy Bob Thornton’s character was the main baddy who got The Rocks brother killed. Rock gets his revenge by killing Billy Bob Thornton at the end of the movie. Was I suppose to feel sadness here? I just wanted to see The Rock kicking ass, and there was some of that, not enough though, need more Rock ass kicking, and I mean ass kicking, not him with a gun shooting people.

Drive Angry

Will this movie had two things going for it, Amber Heard & William Fichtner, did I ever tell you he was at my graduation. Yes, stupid fun. shut off your mind and just watch Amber Heard. Oh, you want to know the plot, ummm, idiot religious nuts believe main religious nut will be rewarded by Satan for killing the baby of the dead main character, Nicolas Cage’s daughter. Nick gets angry from Hell and comes back to hunt down religious nuts, William Fichtner follows Nick around, trying to get Nick back into Hell. Stupid plot, some good action scenes, and Amber Heard, 2 good defeats 1 bad.

Battle L.A.

This movie would of been so much better if it was just Saving Private Ryan with aliens. We don’t need any civilians in this movie. Just have a bunch of marines go into battle saving other marines. The Aliens were really dumb, why go attack cities and get a hostile response, when you could just secretly go to a remote area in the South or North Pole, and just steal the water there? Who is going to notice or care, Santa Clause? Penguins? There is a lot of stupid things the superior Alien force did that made the marines look more smarter than they actually were. Like having all there control & command center located in one location.

The American

Some people say this movie is boring, and sometime it is, but it does make George Clooney’s character seem more isolated. I think most people went into this movie thinking it’s a spy thriller with a lot of action scenes like Jason Bourne, instead what they got was a character study of a professional killer. So if you like those kind of movies, watch this one.

Resident Evil Afterlife

There is a lot of things wrong with this movie, a bunch of slow-mo action sequences that made me laugh, a lot of heroic posses for no reason what-so-ever. Characters just show up and die, I mean you get a little bit connected to some of them, and the next scene they die, just like that. The whole goal of Alice crashing a plane onto a prison to save the survivors there, was just to find a way to introduce Chris. You know what, Alice is really bad at saving people, every person she tries to save either gets capture or dies. The Resident Evil thing still got me through it though, maybe that’s not a good thing, through out the movie I was thinking, why are Las Plagas zombies in the middle of LA? Or why is the big Axe dude from RE5 there too? This movie was created to make money off of Resident Evil fans and it has done its job, cause there is another one coming out, cant wait!

Predators

Hey this was a good movie, Adrien Brody got huge, he had a Arnold moment at the end of the movie, why he just decided to get naked and put mud on himself, when it was revealed in a previous scene that Predators always learn from past failures? plot holes maybe. I still enjoy it, it was a fun watch. Predators have become way too stupid and weak since Predator 2, how many times are they going to fall for the grenade as I’m dying trick. For crying out louad you have a energy gun, just disintegrate them from a distance, and when did this rule of three come from, Predator 1 & 2 both had 1 predator hunting, but ever since, it has to be three. I want one predator in New York City or Hong Kong killing triads and mobsters, with a gritty and out of luck cop kicking its ass in the end, make it happen.

Game of Thrones Ep4

Look like Midget Man™ is in a lot of trouble, get the feeling he’ll try to get out of it by teaming up with Stark Family against his brother. Was I the only one who first saw Sam (the fat new guy if you weren’t paying attention) to kick some ass during that first training session, that turn to be a disappointment quick, hopefully he’ll turn into something more than just a side-kick.

Treme Ep3

Hah, still haven’t gotten over how Delmond give the WTF look to the guy when he mentioned Myspace/Facebook. Realizing that this took place before every artist needed to have a social media platform to give their stuff out to the masses. Hey, if you need a website or a social media page created, why you can just contact me and I’ll set you up.

I’m seeing a lot of actors from The Wire popping up, first with Councilman Carcetti and now I see Det. Roland. Where’s Sonja Sohn, she can be one of Daenerys’ teachers.

Rather than just a Sunday Night TV wrap up, I had a pretty good weekend, so I might as well include the whole weekend. Yes, this weekend I finished Deadspace 2, watched a pretty interesting movie in the Adjustment Bureau, and of course, Treme Ep 2 and Game of Thrones Ep3. Lets get this started.

Deadspace 2

Wasn’t has scary as the the first one, probably because all the enemies I’m already used to seeing, so the spook factor is already gone. Enemies are also a lot easier to kill, which is a good thing cause Visceral for some reason decided to turn this game into DOOM with a butt-load of enemies coming at you at the same freaking time. Cinematic gets a huge boost, each stage transition have some amazing in-game sequences, no longer are every level separated by tram. I do miss the big guns and huge boss encounters of the first game, in this one, their isn’t any that I can remember. I enjoy it very much, took 8 hrs to complete on normal, so if you have a weekend to waste, go get this game.

The Adjustment Bureau

I thought this movie was going to be more of a mind-fuck story than what it really turn out to be, I was hoping alot more was going to be revealed about the Bureau operative. It turned out to be just a romance movie with GOD being a cock block rather than some random douche like in other movies . I still enjoy it though, I enjoy watching Matt Damon act like he’s from Brooklyn, I like watching Roger Sterling, and I especially enjoy watching Emily Blunt. I wanted more mystery than what I got, so watch it with a significant other, cause this will get you laid.

Deadspace 3 better have a limp launching cannon as a weapon

Game of Thrones EP3

So we are still setting up for something, this episode is alright I guess. We see how parents effect the way their children’s demeanor are formed. Still more story & character building, only action we see is some butt-kicking by Jon Snow, and a lot of high class insults being thrown around by everyone. Oh by the way the blonde girl is getting raunchier, I’m going to mention her every week just cause I know she’s going get more hits for my posts.

Treme EP2

Will that was a depressing episode, someone is going to commit suicide, too many depress people can’t all just a sudden get happy again. I smirked when I heard Bobby Jindal’s name, this must of taken place before his creep show performance. Cheer up people, its only another 3 years before BP… oh wait… damn!

Things are building up to something between House Stark and the King’s family, speaking of the King’s family, I think every one of them is psychotic. That little Prince needs to get smack around some more. Here, I know you’ll enjoy watching this over and over again.

I’m starting to hate Eddard’s older daughter, I wouldn’t mind seeing her getting her throat slid.. okay, maybe that was a bit to far, but something harsh needs to happen to her butt. Also, Daenerys, the hot blonde, if you here just to find out more about her, go here and knock yourself out. She seems to be getting more and more ventures, please let there be a lesbian scene, please please please please.

Treme Season 2 Episode 1:
Few thoughts, NYC city chefs aren’t really like this are they? How can a chef possibly be that big of a douche? Wasting all that food and time just because a duck wasn’t cook right? Fuck that. If you know a person like that, you have every ones permission to donkey punch them, twice. Also, Annie and Davis huh? Fine I’ll give it a shot. Jon Seda joins the cast, Yes! Liked him in The Pacific, will see what he brings to this show.
